Red Devils manager, Jose Mourinho could move for two new players in January.
Manchester United have secured consecutive wins to drag themselves back into the race for Champions League qualification spot.
They sit six points behind rivals, City ahead of this weekend's action and Mourinho is now looking ahead to the opening of the transfer window next month.
It was suggested the Red Devils would move for two new defenders in January but the form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo may lead to a change in plan, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Despite the duo's resurgence, United scouted Benfica defender, Victor Lindelof at the weekend and Southampton captain, Jose Fonte is available for £15million. Eric Bailly could also miss up to nine games due to his Africa Cup of Nations commitments.
The Red Devils showed interest in Fonte during the summer transfer window and the Portuguese shares the same agent as Mourinho in Jorge Mendes.
Mourinho is understood to have discussed his transfer plans when Mendes recently visited him at The Lowry Hotel.
Morgan Schneiderlin is expected to join Everton in a permanent deal 18 months after joining United and Mourinho also expects Memphis Depay to leave, be it on loan or permanently - with Everton confirmed admirers of the Dutchman.
