Football legend, Paul Gascoigne has been hospitalised after a 'drunken disturbance with customers' at a London hotel.
Police were initially called to a report of a disturbance at the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch at around 6pm last evening.
They were then called a short time later to reports of a man having been assaulted at the same location.
Staff at the hotel refused to comment.
Some social media users described having witnessed the incident - and seeing Gazza involved - at the hotel.
One person claimed he was drunk - "so drunk he's drooling" - throwing money around and insulting customers.
Eyewitness, Alvin Carpio wrote a series of tweets describing the disturbance which broke out when he was trying to read a book.
Mr Carpio posted on Twitter: “This may be one of the weirdest tweets that I’ve sent.
"I’m in Ace Hotel trying to read but can’t because Paul Gascoigne is behind me causing trouble.”
He added moments later: “It gets crazier: Gazza has just been kicked down the stairs by a guy whose friend got slapped by him. He really isn't in a good place.
“It's a sad state: He's been spitting, making racist remarks & groping women, all while throwing around £ notes."
Mr Carpio later posted a photo showing police cars with blue flashing lights outside the hotel.
He wrote: “The police have arrived. I think they're sorting things out.”
He said some guests and staff at the hotel were helping Gazza, adding: “To see a guy who once peaked his profession like this is tragic.”
When contacted by SportTainment, Mr Carpio said: "I've decided not to share more details.
"He's in a bad state, and don't want to add more oil to the fire, given the reactions to the tweets already."
Another man posted on Facebook that he encountered Gazza in a public toilet and he appeared unwell - and needed help.
He posted: "What a shame. Looks like he might be the next to go before the years out. If what I saw today is anything to go by (sic).
Gazza's spokesman, Terry Baker said that the football star had been in Newcastle over Christmas and had been due to travel to Bournemouth today.
He could not comment on what happened - or say why Gazza had been in London.
He said: "I've been in contact with him throughout Christmas as he's been fine."
Mr Baker later confirmed Gazza had "been taken to hopsital because he has a head wound".
He added: "He hasn't been arrested. He's about to be released and sent home".
A police spokesman confirmed: "Police were called at 18:05hrs on Tuesday, 27 December to reports of a disturbance at a hotel on Shoreditch High Street, E1.
"Officers were called a short time later to reports of a man assaulted at the same location.
"Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended. A 49-year-old man was found suffering from a head injury.
"The man has been taken to an east London hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
"There have been no arrests and enquiries continue."
Mirror Online reported earlier this month that Gazza was back in rehab - in a desperate bid to win his fight against alcohol addiction.
A friend said at the time that the troubled star had “suffered a relapse” and is now receiving treatment.
He was reported to have checked into the centre in the south West - just days after ending up in hospital in Poole, where he now lives, on a drip after a two-day bender.
Gazza admitted at the time he had drunk a bottle of gin alone in his hotel room because he felt “down” before going down to the bar, where he was offered cocaine.
He said his binge at the time was linked to the recent death of his nephew, Jay Kerrigan, 22.
Speaking about his slip back then, he said: “I had a blip and I ended up in hospital on two drips.
“I took myself to hospital because I knew I had messed up. I’d done myself some damage with the gin.”
He added: “I f***ing hate being an alcoholic.”
In October in court, Gazza admitted racially aggravated assault after making racist comments to a security staff member at a show in Wolverhampton.
He was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation for the incident.
