Newly knighted Arsenal superfan, Mo Farah appeared to lighten up the mood at Gunners training today as they prepare for the weekend’s FA Cup match with Preston North End.
The dual Olympic champion over 5,000m and 10,000m put Danny Welbeck through his paces after Arsene Wenger announced he could make his first appearance of the season on Saturday.
Farah is a regular visitor to Arsenal’s London Colney ground and spoke last year about his ambition to be part of the club’s fitness staff when his running days are over.
"One day, I’d love to be able to work for them, maybe as a fitness coach,” he said.
"I’m a big believer in what the body’s capable of with proper training."
This is a gospel the 26-year-old could get on board with.
The forward hasn’t played since suffering a serious knee injury in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City on May 8 last year.
He’s returned to training over the Christmas period and Arsene Wenger said today that he’s in contention for a return this weekend - however, if he’s on the team sheet, it will be on the bench.
"I haven’t decided yet, but he could be,” Wenger said.
He added that Welbeck’s selection depends on the condition of Lucas Perez, the Spanish forward who scored his first Premier League goal this week.
When he does rejoin the side, Welbeck will be a welcome return for Wenger as the Gunners try to lift themselves back into the top four.
They are out of the Champions League spots after rescuing a 3-3 draw with Bournemouth.
“Physically, his fitness is at quite a good level, but of course, the ideal way is to give him two or three games with the under-23s.
"But the situation is not always ideal, sometimes, you have to hurry up
"He wants to play. But Danny is as well conscious [of taking his time]. He came back after a long injury and had a setback so he suffered a lot.
"At the moment, I think he listens well to what people advise him to do, even if he is naturally impatient. After you’ve been out for such a long time you do not want a setback."
