Tottenham have been dealt a major blow to their Premier League title hopes, with Jan Vertonghen set to be sidelined for the next two months.
Vertonghen suffered an ankle injury in the 4-0 thumping of West Brom at the weekend, leaving the pitch in tears.
Now Spurs are resigned to the fact that the Belgian will not feature again until late March, after scans confirmed the injury to be more serious than the club’s medics initially thought.
Vertonghen, 29, has been part of Spurs recent excellent run, impressing on the left side of Mauricio Pochettino’s back three in recent weeks.
Now the Argentine must look to replace the Belgian, either with Ben Davies or Kevin Wimmer, or by switching to a back four and partnering Eric Dier alongside Toby Alderweireld.
Vertonghen has featured in 20 of Spurs 21 Premier League matches this season, missing only the 4-1 victory at Watford through suspension.
Spurs have conceded just 14 times in the league, and have emerged as the most likely threat to league leaders, Chelsea.
Pochettino previously admitted that the injury looked "a very bad one".
And has also insisted that he won't be dipping into the transfer market for a replacement.
"No, this does not change our plans in the market," said the Argentine manager. "We have Ben Davies who can play there, Wimmer is a centre back, who played recently against Aston Villa and Watford and Cameron [Carter-Vickers].
"We have plenty players so we don’t have to move."
