The Teletongue, designed in Japan, is made up of two 'lollipops'.
The first device records one partner's licking sounds and tongue movements, while the other converts these into pleasurable vibrations inside the other partner's mouth.
The designers from Keio University hope to test their invention on a real-life long-distance couple once the Teletongue devices have been perfected to connect over the internet.
The next-generation adult toy was unveiled at the Love and $ex with Robots congress, held at Goldsmiths, University of London.
The Teletongue inventors wrote in a research paper: "With the world becoming more and more global, many couples around the world are having to spend time far away from each other.
"Teletongue consists of two lollipop devices.
"One lollipop records the licking sound and senses the licking gestures, while the other lollipop vibrates accordingly to the licking gestures and play-backs the licking sound."
The idea behind the design was to create a pleasure-giving device that can be used in public, as the everyday act of sucking a lollipop is inoffensive compared to other sex toys.
The researchers wrote: "We hope that Teletongue will be the first step to a more open and casual usage of adult toys and teledildonics - one that is not embarrassing, but one that is comforting and bonding."
The Teletongue project members are Daisuke Yukita, Fathima Assilmia, Nadira Anndhini and Dolhathai Kaewsermwong.
