People are donating thousands to keep digging a huge hole in the ground - without knowing what it's for

They're watching a live stream of the digging set up by Cards Against Humanity, which will end once it runs out of money
If you've ever played Cards Against Humanity, you'll know the creators of the game have a somewhat dark sense of humour.
Some of those cards are a bit "on the edge" and will have you grimacing in your seat.
Their latest stunt doesn't even sound like it should be a thing, but it's gone
viral and has caused people to literally throw their money away.
You see, they're digging a giant hole in the ground somewhere in America. For no good reason.
It's just a hole in the ground. They even admit there's no deeper meaning or purpose to it.
But those watching a live stream of the digging online are contributing money to keep the digging going.
People have literally donated thousands to make the hole bigger - and they don't even know why

Seriously, guys, what are you doing?

The site tries to provide some answers below the video. In response to the question: "What am I going to get for my money?" the response is: "A deeper hole. What else are you going to buy, an iPod?"They admit the act has no meaning whatsoever and they're just doing it "because it's funny".
"You’re supposed to think it’s funny," they write, "You might not get it for a while, but some time next year you’ll chuckle quietly to yourself and remember all this business about the hole."
At the time of writing, there are two hours left on the digger clock. But if people keep spending, they'll keep digging.
So far, $96,000 has been donated to dig the hole and some people have donated over $1,000 each.
As if 2016 couldn't get any more weird...
